Chapter Twelve

This changes nothing. I still have my routine. I still have my job, my cousin, my sessions with Brittany, and the dojo. Now I’m hoping to see Elijah at the dojo. Now I’m hoping Elijah needs to do some work with Cole Security Forces. Now I’m hoping AJ will quit asking me about Elijah. See, nothing changes.

“So, let me get this straight,” AJ repeats my date back to me over coffee the next morning. She has allowed herself a rare second cup for this conversation, and it is obvious she is no longer accustomed to this level of caffeine. “He kissed you at the lighthouse.”

I give her a look.

“Excuse me,” she corrects. “He made out with you at the lighthouse, after you told him he could kiss you. Then you told him he couldn’t kiss you, so you spent the day making puppy eyes at each other and working out at First Landing. Then you told him he could kiss you goodnight. And now you don’t know when you’re going to see him again?”

AJ sets her cup of coffee down after a long, exaggerated drink. I smile at her and finish packing my lunch for the day.

“That about sums it up,” I say. I know I’m smiling. It feels good to smile about something new like this. I also cried into my pillow half the night last night, so I’m not sure I’m entirely ready, but I’m up for the fight. I’m going to fight for some happiness for myself. I think my fight started with my move up here, but I’m not going to stop there. I can’t just exist. I have to live.

“I’m so proud of you, sweetie,” she says. Her grin is by far larger than mine. “Zeniya, do you hear that?” she asks her belly. “Your auntie is working her way up to getting laid!”

I almost choke on my coffee. There is so much wrong with that statement, I hardly know where to begin.

“First off, I’m her cousin, like a second cousin or something like that. Second, you should NOT be talking to your kid about my sex life.”

“And third?”

“Eh, Zeniya’s kinda pretty. I can’t complain about that one.”

“You think so?”

“Yes,” I tell her. This is the flow of our conversations. From my sex life to baby names and everything in between. She and Zane have an appointment later this week to find out if they are having a boy or a girl. They could have found out earlier, but opted not to. Now they’re contemplating again. It would sure make baby shopping easier if they find out. But not my choice.

We finish rinsing our dishes and both head out the door. Zane left an hour ago, but I know I’ll be seeing him at work today. Like I do everyday. It’s the one thing I don’t talk to AJ about. It’s the one little lie of omission that is slowly killing me inside. Like I don’t have enough to deal with.

At the office, I settle into my day with the new addition of checking my cell phone.
